• Accommodative ability falls almost linearly with age, with presbyopic symptoms starting to occur at the age of 40 to 45 years.
• It has been well recognized for more than 250 years that accommodation involves a lens-based change in the refractive power of the eye.
• Accommodation is driven by cone photoreceptors, and, thus, it is expected to be less effective under
low light conditions.
• The youthful accommodation system allows the eye to vary its focus to obtain reasonably clear
retinal images of objects at different distances, but such focus is rarely exact or stable.
